What to Do with Worn Out Sneakers

What to Do with Worn Out Sneakers

I recently bought the first new pair of sneakers I’ve had in about eight years (!!), since the ones I had were so worn out the soles were separating from the shoe! Which prompted me to consider what I could do with my worn out shoes?

Yes, I like to be frugal when possible … and I also believe strongly in stewardship. To me, that includes making responsible decisions when getting rid of things that no longer serve a purpose for me or are being replaced.

A childhood friend’s mother had shared recently on Facebook about donating shoes to charity called Soles4Soles. Check out their mission statement and brief video:

I thought about repairing my tennis shoes and donating them, but I was concerned that my repairs wouldn’t be adequate. I wouldn’t want to donate “junk” and I wasn’t even sure Soles 4 Souls would accept shoes in this condition.

Since my feet are so small, I often have a hard time finding shoes. Some Nike shoes come in size 5 and, although, they can be hard to find, with the convenience of online shopping I can now find them much more easily.

So as I began looking at current styles of Nike sneakers online, I stumbled onto an initiative Nike has where old worn out sneakers that can no longer be used can be sent in and recycled for use as play surfaces. It's called Nike Reuse-a-Shoe.

It makes me happy to know my old, worn out shoes can still serve a useful purpose!

Had you ever heard of Soles4Souls or Nike's Reuse-a-Shoe program before?
